Why Support Locally Grown?

Enhance SUSSEX County’s local economy: By purchasing produce and other items from local growers you are providing stability to your local economy through the support of local businesses.

Save natural resources: Buying locally makes you an invaluable link in the process of saving resources such as fossil fuels and packaging materials. Also, we are right here in your community so the expense of transportation and delivery is kept to a minimum.

Provide learning opportunities: Locally Grown supporters provide member growers the means to help educate our community about the importance of sustainable agriculture.

Supporting a way of life: The number of small farms in the United States has decreased dramatically in the last decade. Please help us preserve an honest and worthy means of making a living.

We believe that small, diverse, family-owned farms contribute to society’s overall health.

EAT BETTER! Know who grows your food. Taste what just-picked food is all about, and explore the bounty of Sussex County!

How did this BBQ IN A BOX come about?

BBQ IN A BOX is the brainchild of Rutger’s Cooperative Extension Agent, Steve Komar, the Agricultural Extension Agent for Sussex County.
Steve wanted to provide a platform for the County’s farmers to work together to promote the bounty of agricultural goods grown and raised here.

This promotional effort grew from Steve’s idea to work together to provide one stop shopping for consumers interested in local farm food.

Combining this with the new online farmers market- www.blairstown.locallygrown.net- owned and operated by experienced agricultural consultant Tamara Scully, formally of the Foodshed Alliance, Glenbrook Nursery and Bear Creek Berry Patch, and also a correspondent for THE NEW JERSEY FARMER, BBQ IN A BOX was born.

The farmers willing to jump onboard this innovative idea are to be greatly thanked, as is Donna Traylor, Sussex County Office of Conservation and Farmland Preservation, for her input and assistance.
